Interview with Michael Marcus,

Detroit Tradecraft: We are talking with Michael Marcus during Detroit Fanfare 2011. We talked with him about a month prior--same difference--but still a cool talk.

DT: Michael, what long-term projects are you working on?
MM: I am currently working on IF-X, which comes out every two months. Its planned last issue is due to be released December 2012. In 2013 I will be running a genre based monthly series for a 12 month run. I am currently looking for stories to fill these spots now- my plan is to store up a years worth of content during 2012 so that I don't have to chase down creators for contributions by deadline and can print on time.

DT: What are your upcoming IF-X themes?
MM: The themes are:

Halloween, in stores by October 2011, (premiering at Fanfare)
West, in stores by December 2011, deadline November 2011
Dangerous Dames, in stores by February 2012, deadline January 2012
April Fools, in stores by April 2012, deadline March 2012
Luck, in stores by June 2012, deadline May 2012
Crime, in stores by August 2012, deadline July 2012
Halloween, in stores by October 2012, deadline September 2012
Endings, in stores by December 2012, deadline November 2012

DT: Wow! It sounds like you are planning way in advance. Why did you decide to go to genre-based books instead of the IF-X theme base?

MM: The problem with IF-X was that you never knew what types of content to expect with each issue. If it is genre-based, people will know what they are getting with each title--"Infinite Futures" will always be science-fiction, "Infinite Fear" will be horror, and so on. Once I have twelve months of content for a given title, I will produce it over twelve months, put out a trade paperback, and then move on to the next project.

DT: Is there a chance this could backfire? Maybe you may do an unpopular issue one month vs a popular one the next?

MM: That should not happen if people knew what they are getting in a given title. The hope is if people know what they are getting their favorite genre, they will stick with it. The only real variable is how long it might take to put together a 12-month content pile for any given genre.

DT: What are your biggest issue and value with comics?
MM: The biggest challenge for any creator is that it takes more effort to produce a work then it takes to consume and read... The biggest value of producing anything is having others see your vision and acknowledge your accomplishments.

DT: In your words, what do you do when putting out your book?
MM: As an editor, I provide a venue for the artist and maintain the quality of the book, including layout. As a publisher, I have to sell ads (sometimes design them), and in producing the book, I risk my name, credibility, and, of course, investment at the hands of the public.

DT: What would you like to do after one of your genre series ends?
MM: I would like to continue letting creators and artists play in the "comic sandbox." I would also like to keep on creating games, which is my primary joy.

DT: Games? Okay, what do you currently do with games?
MM: I can manufacture my own games, but I am also actively selling production licenses for various games I have created, including "Sudoku: Tactics."

DT: Are there conventions that are good for games licensing? I am aware of the Advanstar Licensing Show in New York for licensing properties.
MM: There are toy and games producers' conventions, like GAMA, and gaming conventions like Gen-Con, and Origins--there are usually companies there that will examine products and purchase licenses.

DT: Back to your 2013 year with the genre comics--do you have any clues to what we can expect?
MM: Well, one of the titles I have in mind is called "WRONG." I want that book full of controversial material, whether politically incorrect, bizarre, or just shocking. I want say something, but not with a gimmick or cliche'; something that makes people think...

DT: What do you value most of the accomplishments you have made?
MM: One of the wisest people I've worked for said that the real value of one's life is in the way he or she touches other lives for the better. I feel that IF-X has formed such a community with creators. It gave proof of concept for artists and writers, even to the point of "discovering" some new talent, even though the book wasn't really all that profitable an experiment. Still, I can build off of that and make the next project better for all involved.

The sourcebook, IMAGINOS DECLASSIFIED will be at our booth at Detroit Fan Fare in September. If everything pans out the Imaginos Table with be next to the Tradecraft Table.
Tradecraft will also be represented in both books with AD Space.

I am happy that things are working out like this so the fans can see what we have to offer on all fronts.

Detroit Fan-fare fundraisers and souvenier books- also awards night ceremony

FYI- Detroit tradecraft will have a artist table for Detroit Fan-fare- I need to create a 50 word bio for the group- any ideas on what to put in the bio- maybe get a group photo together as well--- okay below is another letter from the organization needing support for their charity sketching events- check it out......

please take a look at the website- their seems to be a lot of activities set up that one may need to pay separately to attend or participate
*********************************************************************************

ARTIST SKETCHBOOK
Detroit Fanfare will be producing a special themed Artist Sketchbook--- "Re-Imagining Detroit". The theme is to take iconic symbols of the Detroit area and have fun with it in a positive (or at least neutral) manner. To give you an idea, some of the works already in production are:
  • Joe Louis' fist as the hand from Hellboy-----The Spirit of Detroit statue as Watchmen's Dr. Manhatten-----Godzilla attacking the RenCen
Some general ideas that could be considered are the Red Wings logo, the fountain in Hart Plaza, the Diego Rivera mural, Ambassador Bridge, the giant tire on 1-94, any of the factories, etc...you get the idea.

The book will be printed by Detroit Fanfare and sold at the convention for as low of a price as we can. We are limiting it to only artists at the convention and with each copy, the purchaser will get a list of all the artists who contributed and their table number at the show. The plan is that the fans will go and get each page signed or to buy a print (or the original piece if you're so inclined) that you might make up.

We would provide a few copies for each artist and make the sketchbook available at cost for anyone that wants to purchase additional copies.

Our suggestion is to take the art piece and make a print or cards or whatever...perhaps put it in color, and have those at your table. The sketchbook is to get the fans to your table and hopefully, if they like the piece, would be interested in buying the print/card that you have on hand.

If you are interested in taking part, we need to know as soon as possible. The spots are reserved on a first come, first served basis and of course, we want to get it done as soon as we can.

Contact Jay Shimko at jayshimko@gmail.com in regards to the Artist Sketchbook.

QUICK SKETCH

This is a charity event with proceeds going to the Scleroderma Foundation. Fans would buy tickets for $1 each (discount for large purchases). All paper and tickets will be supplied.

This will run on Saturday, sometime around noon in the large panel room. Artists will be a table likely on a stage and after a chance to introduce themselves, then the action begins. The fans would shout out ideas for the artists to draw.

The artists can do whatever they want. as the artists complete pieces, they will be walked around the room then set in front of the artists. at about the 40-45 minute mark there will be a last call for tickets to be bought. Then we start randomly picking pieces of art and drawing tickets to see who wins that piece of art. We repeat until all the art is gone.

We’d like to find out as soon as possible who wants to contribute to this and if we get enough feedback, we may extend to having another Quick Sketch on Sunday.

Please contact Erik or Vincent at QuickSketch@live.com for confirmation or questions.

the awards night ceremony event- Shel Dorf awards

For now, though, this email is focusing on the SHEL DORF AWARDS. First off, hopefully, you voted on the nomination ballots that are still available until August 7 (Sunday). http://www.sheldorfawards.com/submissions

The Shel Dorf Awards will be presented on Saturday from 8-10 at a special dinner ceremony at the Adiamo’s Restaurant inside the Marriott (the con hotel). There will be a cocktail party starting at 7:30 before we all head into the awards.

The Awards will consist of a full course buffet dinner (with 3 different entrees) and an OPEN BAR. The second half will be the presentations of the Shel Dorf Award for the categories listed on the nomination forms. In addition, there will the Legacy Awards which are akin to Lifetime Achievement Awards and this year, we have two attending honorees.

There will be a moderator for the Awards and each of the winners will be announced by one of our comic guests. Presenters lined up so far include Kevin Eastman, Tommy Lee Edwards, J.T. Krul, Ron Marz, Phil Hester, Raven Gregory, Todd Dezago, and others to be announced.

Space is severely limited for this event. We do have our invited guests who will be attending and we will be making seats available for fans who want to purchase tickets to the events.

However, we want to make some seats available for all the creators and vendors attending the show. So, we are offering a chance for you to RESERVE a spot for the dinner. At this time, we are simply taking reservations and we’ll arrange payment later. The cost for creators is $35 for the event and that includes dinner, the open bar, and a gift bag of assorted goodies. This is below Detroit Fanfare’s cost and considering that the price is about what you would pay for a good meal, and a few drinks, works out to be quite a value. After we offer the creators a chance for the discount tickets, they will be made available to fans for the price of $75 so we are providing over 50% in savings.

In addition, we are spreading out the guests and you will have the opportunity to specify which table you want to sit at. This is first come, first served on the reservations. That’s why this email is sent separately…just respond with your intentions, how many tickets you want, and your choice of who to sit with. You can give secondary choices but if you reserve early, you likely wouldn’t have to worry about it. That’s all we’re doing right now…

Here are the following guests/promoters that you can designate to sit next to. They are in alphabetical order and of course, we will be adding more later. We haven't made the final arrangement so there will likely be 2-3 guests at each table. Remember, this is simply a RESERVE and when we get the final tabulation of who is attending and at each table, we will go in order of reserves and finalize their choice and then process the payment. Also, any nominated creator will be invited as our guest.

July moving on- coming into August

I wanted to write about July meeting and wanted to get it out of the way before August hit. Here we go- I have changed the group's standing from LLC to social group/savings club- its a pseudo- non profit standing (per US govt classification) this will allow us to get a bank account for cheaper and place us in better position to move to 501C3 status in the future... I presented this fact in the July meeting. Heather Spraga offered to be the secretary of the organization for meetings. A organization document will be presented in the August meeting. Another shocker was the vote to not pursue the Kickstarter on "The Door Book 2" due to short timing. The group can pursue another kickstarter in the future- So pat jackson will have to pursue adspace cost for Book 2. We reviewed the images prepared by Marco Evans in the meeting. The story telling is getting better- Mark Dudley is creative director on book 2 project- and noted that Marco should be ready by end of July. Heather Spraga is working with Dave Perrin to prepare an 8 page comic side story that will appear in Book 2 as well. It will be based off her sci-fi novel that's currently out in stores.

The Door Issue 2 Update

Marco sent me the revised pages(or should I say some of the revised pages) for THE DOOR issue 2. I have say that I see strong improvement some areas, and I think that we have polish this and work more on areas that are deficient. All and all I am very happy with Marcos progress.

Sorry for late post- it was a busy June for Members at Detroit Tradecraft- we had our June Meeting on June 11, 2011 and it was packed full of assignments- that are still forth coming. We had a visit from Comic waste-dump (see http://comicwastedump.com ) owner Brian Sousa- he reviewed the possibilities of putting Detroit Tradecraft comics on the site and offer individuals with comics a place their printed comics online for a web comic (page tuner feel). He offered a great deal for members at 2 comics for $80. set up including a character and creators bio pages included with the comic. The group thought this was a cool idea to review. Our overall meeting discussed the following:

Background Story- writer Heather Spraga, Marco Evans- initial layout, creative director Mike Dudley- colorist- needed

Kick starter project for door book two- some initial artwork has come to Michael Marcus for the Door Book2- starting June 26-outstanding images needed for the presentation- are a cover image, storyboard for presentation, and a theme- Pat jackson review that end date for all materials needs to be in and presentation dome by August 1, 2011. pat jackson, Michael Marcus, Heather Spraga, and Oz wilson will need to set up meetings and materials deadline for July. ************************************************************June 26 events
Michael Marcus at Warriors comics in Wayne- showed gaming prowess.
Michael Marcus was at the comic Shop in Wayne Michigan on Saturday June 26 from 9am- 9pm showing off his own game- Sudoku Tactics (ST)at the signer during games day at Warriors Comics on Michigan Avenue- He was autographing IFX comics as well as promoting his own games ST. It was well received. Michael urged Pat Jackson to talk to the Owner of the store and suggested a Detroit Tradecraft signing day- perhaps in August once we get The Door Book 2 completed. Great work Michael....

****************************************************************
Gerald Walker and Marco Evans at Black AGE comics day in Detroit - Detroit tradecraft represented.
Teon and Marco represented Detroit Tradecraft at the Nsorama Academy School in Detroit. The Convention was a small intimate setting even that boasted comics, hip hop, and African based vendor products such as DVD's, apparel, and jewelry. The organizers expressed several times how gratedful they were for Detroit tradecraft for coming out and representing as they did. Teon and Marco presented their Filmworks promo magazine to the crowd- and I will give credit again to Michael Marcus- I could see a bit of his salesmanship in Teons and Marco's presentation to the crowd.- they sold a lot of copies of Filmworks, the Door book 1 and some FX mulrooneys......

The DOOR Book 1 presented at MOTOR CITY Convention

I just wanted to present the inside cover and briefly present the talent who worked on the "the Door Book 1.... so i will leave it up to the main author- Marco Evans to explain- so read on...- click on image for larger version
see you all soon- C. P Jackson- and note June 11th meeting is our monthly meeting that will occur at 1431 Washington Blvd, Detroit, mi

Detroit tradecraft at MotorCity

We did it- we presented "The Door" book 1-Comic to Motor City convention that happened May 13-15 2011-at the Suburban Collections Showplace (formerly rock Financial Convention center) in Novi, Mi and it was by any other words- REAL FUN!!! here is a pic of the cover. Its List price is 2.99 and we will begin to determine distribution to the retailers in our June 11 meeting. We will be working with condensed planning to present the conclusion of "The Door" Book2 for the Detroit Fan fare on September 24-25 at Cobo Hall Convention center in Detroit, Mi. Detroit Motor City convention was Detroit Tradecraft's re-launch as a a rejuvenated collaborative group of artists and writers and we worked hard to share booth costs and show ourselves and a unified front. The experience was extremely beneficial to all that attended and we hope more will get involve for the Detroit fan fare. After the September event Detroit Tradecraft will see where we go from there- so stay tuned comic lovers

quick meeting in May- prep for Motorcity con

okay I am trying to be proactive about writing about our meetings so I am hopefully getting better- but here lies the reason- gotta get ready for MotorCity Convention this coming weekend...

Okay what did we discuss- in short we need to:
1-determine who will be at the table during the three days
2. finalize payment for the first episode of "The DOOR"
3. prepare the logistics for how materials will be presented at the table and
4. get the "The DOOR" printed and ready for the convention
5.finalize pitch-in payments and release receipts for ads and pitch- in payment for table and booth
6 the need for a post-mortem on the book
7discuss future actions for "The DOOR" book 2 and using "Kickstarter" for future projects
okay that's it

1 After a first decision and additional call from Dudley we will have these people available at the booth'
Friday- Pat Jackson, Joe Cain, and Gerald Walker(needs to pay this day)
Saturday- Gerald Walker, Michael Marcus, and Marco Evans (one needs to pay)
Sunday- Mark Dudley, Oz Wilson, and Marco Evans (one needs to pay)
since we have three people in attendance each day- I will propose buying one-3day pass that will be passed onto the third person- please response if this does not make sense

2 The Door will be paid for by I Below Ground Production budget- which I expect everyone going can compensate the payment- I will get the books on Tuesday May 10 from Grekko printing in Plymouth Michigan-.

3 Still an open question is what is to be at the table the three days- Michael Marcus relayed that he wants IF-X issues 1 and 2 to be displayed and is willing to offer up his book stand for use at the table. Joe Cain stated Mark Dudley will have prints to present as well. Teon stated that xlr8 may have book 1 ready for the convention. Pat Jackson is getting a poster ready for the convention of his characters in his FX Mulrooney comic series. What is still needed to call for is how to get them at the convention and what is to be displayed each day- I think its easier that each person brings their own things the days they are there and only joint things like the "The DOOR" be there each day- unless some items are designated as splits in profits. lets communicate through the week- the current big banner is in Marco's car....

4 was stated in #2

5. pitch in payments should be made to Pat jackson- so far Oz has payed for the book pitch in, his ad , the back cover spot, and booth pitch in. and Joe Cain payed for himself and Dudley. Arvell Jones payed for a quarter page ad-the following pitch-in is needed for
Gerald Walker- $36- book and table
Marco Evans- $36- book and table
Michael Marcus $42 ( book, table, and 1/4th page ad)
other ads currently in book less printing ad needs to be assessed as well

6 we will need to do a post-mortem on this first book and the convention presentation- we can discuss this fully after the convention

7 it was mentioned and agreed upon by the group to pursue a Kick-starter project to cover the next convention and book installment . This will require forming a bank account and a plan.... TBD

It should be noted as a typo that Joe Cain contributed to the story of the "DOOR" but was left off the credits- this shall be remedied in book 2... and also Detroit Fanfare is on September 24-26- 2011- this is the date to shoot for book2 and an upgraded DTC unified front.

okay - whew I am done- now onto business- see everyone at the conventions- I still need to get material for booth set up- lets keep in contact by phone if possible.
PEACE!!!

late posting- April meeting and Green brains

Hi every one- sorry for the late posting- I should have had this out last week this time- but here is what has happened with Detroit Tradecraft in April....

Meeting minutes:- the main focus of the April meeting was to discuss deadlines on getting prepared for May 2011 Motor City convention. It will be happening on May 14-16 at The Rock Financial convention center in Novi Michigan. The goal is to have a Detroit tradecraft booth in the artist alley section (TBD- on my part)- so what we would like to see as far as presentation for this May outing is The book- "the door- issue one completed and printed for the convention and a banner completed as well. T shirts will have to wait for Detroit Fan fare- . We discussed cost for the book to get printed and what each individual involved with the book would pay. We also discussed the pitch in cost for the banner and the convention. All monies should be turned in to Patrick Jackson by end of April 2011. I will be handing out receipts for all those paying . Here is where the lateness of this note hits me- those wishing to have their bios and two pages of images or other in the book should have got them to Michael Marcus by this past weekend. I just got my info in this morning by 3:00 am- so I am beat down currently. And I still need to get images for advertisement in the book as well. I do need to say this- I applaud Michael Marcus again for getting on our ass about deadlines-. We still need to get in items to Teon so he can forward to Dave to get the banner done if we are going forward with that- again turn monies into me by months end for banner and booth space. I will give receipts for those who pitch in. I will arrange that everyone will either get a badge of we will rotated attendance- so keep on me on that point.......

Green Brain outing- On wednesday, some of the crew made their way to Green Brain to participate in a comics Jam- Green Brain Comics is located in Dearborn, Michigan on Michigan avenue and is a cool place to get great comics and hang out. It was a more close setting so the folks who came- Marco Evans, Teon Walker and Patrick Jackson met Michael Marcus ( a comics jam regular) at the store with a few regulars to draw some comic strips- It was a different experience for us comic book heads- who wanted to do this long winded drawings in the jams that came by- but near the end we were able to see it was about writing and communication as much if not more than about the image. It was telling on how bad my mind works cold- but I think I got use to it near the end. The only short end was that we stayed too long and couldn't eat afterwards.... will be learned next time. It was told to us about the jams were every Wednesday in Hamtramck and Green Brain hosts it in Dearborn on the second Wednesday--- something to know....

future events- FYI Next Monday- April 25th 7:00 pm ACM SIGGRAPH Detroit meeting at Eprize in Pleasant Ridge, Mi- design focus

Dr Sketchy sketch event, Hamtramck, Mi April 30th about 6:00- check website

All monies for Motor City convention goers- due April 30th, 2011
$45/person for total- book, table, and banner cost
more for others with ad space

SPACE in Columbus OHIO-H.I.M. Rules!!

I had the great pleasure to go to S.P.A.C.E. with Michael Marcus last weekend- March 19-20th In Columbus, Ohio. S.P.A.C.E. is a well known Indy comics cartooning convention that sports a unique talent of individual creators, comic artists, and publishers. Some stuff was rather rough and some stuff was beautifully well done. It was kind of all over the place as far as quality and variety of businesses and many of the attendees are fans in general. I sat at the booth with Michael Marcus and got to see how he worked the crowd. He featured H.I.M. (Hamtramck Idea Men) comics series IF-X, His games, Sudouko Tactics and his games pack(sorry forgot that name), and his well received and talked about Primer- "How to Publish Your Comic Without Losing Your Shirt". -I even bought a copy of that. It appeared that Michael knew the crowd and audience of the show and did not flinch in his sales game. I was especially impressed on the fact that Mr Marcus was able to publish his last two issues of IF-X using some of the tactics from his Primer... all in all it was a coup for Hamtramk Idea Men and Michael Marcus... Michael- when you get the chance send me some pics that you took from the con- oh here is one sketch I sold for $5....cheese

Inspirational meeting at Laurel manor/ Livonia

went to laurel manor for town hall meeting for tax incentive for michigan Film community- last Thursday- Feb- 24. It was Surprising!!!- the core Detroit tradecraft members That I knew about that were there was- Teon and Myself- I also saw Arvell Jones, and Desmond Jones and was alerted to it by Mike Winn who I suppose was also there with Keith Pollard ans maybe other i did not mention. It was basically a call for action from all creatives to contact their congress people and prep them not to vote for Govorner Snyder's plan to cap the current incentive at 25 million dollars and not support creating yearly changable referendum (i think that was the term- a way every year people would have to lobby back to keep the numbers the same and vote again on the industry)- we heard speakers like Mitch Albom, Emery King ( from the DMC commercials), Jeff Daniels-actor, Mike Binder actor(from Minority Report), university professors and film students.
The true fact was stated that the guys at the head of this push were conservatives as well as liberal in political leanings but all believed in getting creatives and support jobs here in Michigan and not just taking the money and running out of the state as it has been portrayed by many on the outside looking in.

So for my part- i wrote a letter to my State representative and senator- for this reason alone- inspite of all the rhetoric- Kieth Pollard one of my mentors and a fellow dispaced worker at Ford motor company had finally scored a job as head Storyboard artist at Maxar studios for films. Showing the incentive was bringing in permanent resident studios that could potentially employ artists and writers here in michigan- people in Detroit Tradecraft. But the full realization of these incentives may be lost before we could see actual residents forming their own services businesses and supporting the film industry- like i want to do as well...
So there you have it- I ask each member of to get out to their congressmen and women and make a stand for an industry that may help us all stay in Michigan and do the jobs and careers we always dreamed of doing...
thanks
C. Patrick Jackson

FEBRUARY meeting- minutes

The February meeting was held on February- 19 2011 with the following in attendance:

David Perrin,
Gerald Walker (Teon),
Michael Marcus,
Marco Evans,
Patrick Jackson,
and Mark Dudley by skype

we had a real meaty discussion focused on several topics
organization, financing/fundraising, promotion/presentation at conventions, and membership
Dave made a lot of point on observations and statements:

promotion:- creating a group t-shirt for conventions was tagged a way to get membership, show solidarity, and attract attention. Instead of paying dues members get a tshirt for $10, and access to the facebook page , yahoogroup site, and blog as well as potential emailed newsletter.

presentation- sorry for the females in the group- but it was suggested that we get a pretty lady to wear the tshirt and pass out info at the booth to help attract people at the convention- want to stay politically correct-lol

financing projects- Michael Marcus put out there that he was financing his books through "kick-starter" an Amazon tool setup and that we need to think about putting projects like the door through this process- TBD

Mark Dudley who will be leading Palladium Books comics division suggested we try to present "The Door" project to Image- due to the challenge of distribution and dealing with Diamond.

both options of financing and distribution should be understood- but the first priority needs to be about getting Book 1 completed- it was noted about having the book completed by Motorcity convention in May. The current production team will need to meet every two weeks until the product is done- Michael Marcus will be the editor on this project- I got the feeling Teon wants to be Creative director.

Public Relations- Dave Perrin stated he will try to talk to a PR specialist to see if there can be some help in that are for the group.

It was also mentioned about getting a comic store to adopt Detroit Tradecraft as well- everyone thought this to be a great idea-

fundraising idea
It was also mentioned on getting speakers to talk and setting up a paid event to help in financing Detroit Tradecraft projects and convention appearances.

PR
Pat Jackson asked was there a way to set up a panel discussion at Motor City or the Like- everyone agreed it were possible if we contacted the Motorcity ASAP and organized how we would set it up- it should be set up with Detroit Fanfare as well.

Promotion/marketing
Mark Dudley suggested he wanted press releases done for each event as well as getting a single Detroit Tradecraft portfolio to show at the events and conventions- this was agreed to be a good idea- we need to schedule this in for Motorcity ( by May).

Jobs:
Mark Dudley- noted that he will be leading Palladium Books comics division and will be looking for artists in the group once finances are understood.

Pat jackson mentioned (briefly) he will be working with KTUNEZ.com and needs to get animations done- he will need costs on potential 30 second- up to 30 minute animated spots using the Ktunez character- this will be 2d and simple animations similar to DORA the Explorer at first and using the Ktunez music soundtrack songs- he will review with the animation members of group. He imagines these can be either flash or after-affects animations

Michael Marcus is always looking for member submissions to IF-X comics
